Signal lights, license plate...
Well I just got a $100 ticket this morning. I pulled into the parking lot and was already getting off my bike when the guy came up behind me. I was driving really nice and easy way below the speed limit when he saw me.
-He tells me my license plate holder is illegal
-My LED signal lights are too small and
- I dont' have rear side reflectors on my bike
So he gives me $100 fine for the license plate and gives me an inspection thing. I live in Saskatchewan, Canada btw.
The signals are brighter then factory so I don't see the big problem and I didn't think stock CBRs had side reflectors on the tail? I assumed that since it was a legit aftermarket kit that it wouldn't be illegal...
Anything I can do about this? I really don't want to put the stock signals back on, they are so ugly.
Here is a pic of my bike:

Re: Signal lights, license plate...
You guys have your own set of regs. that im not familiar with, but in the U.S. the D.O.T. gives a measurment of surface area for our turn signals and side reflectors (and yes there required legaly). The tag bracket it's self wont be illegal. The charge would be failure to display plate properly ie.. not fully visable from every angle if followed. You may or may not have some room to work with this one. You will need to research this one and find out the exact wording of the law and it's generaly accepted interpitation to see where you stand. By the way most stuby turn signals dont meet U.S./ D.O.T. standards , I'm sure canada has very simular rules for size.

commuting on a VLX600 shadow for now, 60MPG!!! I punched out the baffles, so it has that V-twin snap and crackle that made H/D so infamous. Except this little scute is rice powered!!lol

Alright, well I'm looking aroung for a published version of the actual regs. Anyone know where a guy would find this for a Canadian such as myself.
Thanks for the help btw.

Re: Signal lights, license plate...
What about a ticket being really really hard to read. Could I take it to court and say its ambiguous and improperly written and it can hardly be considered a legal document.
For Vehicle Make he put: Honda Sport
and for Type/Make & Model : Mc Red (or at least thats what I think it says)
You can't even read the location. He also gave me a paper saying I have to get my bike inspected but it says
"You are required to apear with this inspection ticket to: Saskatoon Police service, blahblah address, on/before the ___day of ___, 20__ by 4:00PM."
Except there is NO date written there! So can I pretty much just discard this?
I really dont' want to pay this. He could have just given me a warning. I mean I kind of understand the license plate bit but the signal light thing is ridiculous.

Re: Signal lights, license plate...
Doesn't Canada have its own version of the DMV? If they do they probably have a link to the traffic laws of your city/Providence/Country
The illegilbe ticket thing isn't really the officers fault there are like 8 copies per ticket, and the ticket paper sucks to begin with making it almost impossible to get a good copy. Your date might be on the ticket but it just didn't bleed through the copies enough for you to read it, I would call the courthouse or police station.

Re: Signal lights, license plate...
I am also not familiar with Canadian traffic laws, but I have have been pulled over for the same violations on my bike. The motorcycle officer told me my plate was too low to read (I did have a passenger at the time, sure it made a difference) and my signals "probably weren't legal" either. I can't say I disagree, I mean, my fender eliminator kit is purely for looks and the tag is WAY down there. Also, my older brother was following me a few weeks ago and said my rear turn signals look like fireflys having a seizure. The aftermarket signals on your bike may very well be brighter than stock, but may not actually be more visible because they are so much smaller in size. Make sense? You sure can't miss stock signals. At any rate I told the officer I would figure something out, and he let me off with a warning. Of course, that was weeks and weeks back and of course I didn't change anything. Could I get pulled over again and/or ticketed for the same thing? Yes. Is it very likely I'll ride by another MC cop that is that bored? Probably not. As far as your ticket is concerned, it is probably going to be hard to beat your ticket. You only have to take the bike to get it inspected if you want the ticket reduced. You can still ride it the way it is. It's up to you.

Re: Signal lights, license plate...
Now that I read the inspection thing again there is another line that says:
Is a full SGI, light, medium or heavy vehicle inspection required for this vehicle?
He has no circled so I guess that is why there is no date. So basically I'll just pay the fine and risk getting caught again if I don't change it. The only reason I dont' want to pay the fine is if it affects my driving record. SGI (our DMV equiv) works on a points system and when you get in an accident its -6 points and tickets vary in points depending on what it is. I don't know if this will affect my safety rating or not. I'm going to call and find out but I really hope not because I'm at -9 already. Wah!

We have a point system in the states as well, but too many points are bad as opposed to too few points. Here, though, that would be a non-moving violation, so there would be no points to worry about anyway. Only moving violations (speeding, running red light, etc) come with points here. It might be different there, though, check it out. I don't know if you have something equivalent to traffic court there where you can try to tell your side of the story to a judge, but if you do you could tell the judge that you will pay the ticket but request him not subtract any points. Good luck.

Re: Signal lights, license plate...
Well I called SGI yesterday and they give me a list of offences that you would get "demerit points" for. Looks like you're right about the non-moving violation. Its more about breaking rules while you are actually driving. Doesnt' really have anythign to do with your vehicle itself.

Re: Signal lights, license plate...
Alright well here is an update:
I realized the office didn't even sign or date the ticket! Now they've sent me a letter saying they've "made an ammendment to ticket # xxxx and have updated the signature and date."
Are you serious?! Can they do that?!

Apparently it doesn't matter if the officer is handicapped.
