got a 2003 600rr and i need a new chain and since im getting that ill get new sprockets too. stock gearing is what? 16 front and 43 rear correct? i wanna stay with the stock gearing.  im kinda confused about what im seeing like the 525 conversion kits or whatever it is.  i want strong sprockets and a good strong chain thats gonna last for awhile so im guessing stock would be the way to go for the sprockets? any feedback on this would be great fellas i.e. good brands to buy or even a link with a good low price would be very appreciated. looking forward to your feedback.

 The 525 or 520 ( # refers to chain size) conversion kits are for people with heavier chains like the 530. the basic idea is the lite weight chain and lite sprockets  will reduce rotating mass ( the fly wheel effect ) giving you some what qiucker acceleration and quicker engine braking since less weight takes less time to spool up and down. The down side is they usualy wont last as quite as long ( somtimes marginal difference though) as the same quality 530 chain just because it is biger making it a bit stronger. From the factory,  usualy 600cc bikes get a 520 or 525 chain  and liter class bikes (1000cc and up) will run a 530 or larger chain because of the extra power. Of course they choose chains for long life as well as performance

I would go with the same stock chain again, you should look at the side plates on your chain. It should have the chains man. and size stamped on it   (ex. D.I.D 525). according to my dennis kirk cat. your bike runs a 16front and 43rear (teeth) sprockets with 108 link chain in 525 grade. If you want better acceleration (at the expense of a couple mph topspeed) you can get a 15 tooth front.  108 links will work with that but your chain wear guide will not be any good any more. This will also throw your speed O off about 7 mph (67displayed will realy be 60).

I have the -1tooth front sprocket on my bike and I like the extra snap in acceleration my self, of course like I said  my speed O is off by 7 and my gas milage went down a bit. but the bike is a rocket with it ( and a wheelie monster),  I'll leave that up to you. Your back sprocket should be fine, get your self a Dennis Kirk cat.  There is all kinds of extra info in there and you can drool over stuff you want!!!

hubbard your information has been very beneficial. thankyou for your time. i took a look at my chain on the side plates but i dont see anything on it. anyway ive been looking around online at alot of stuff on chains. it seems that D.I.D. and RK have good ratings according to this...

Yeah, the D.I.D. and RK are exelent chains, as a matter of fact I had a rk chain put on my bike over a year ago (about 8000 miles ago) and it's only needed one very minor slack adjustment. And I love to punch it up till about 60 to 65 every chanc i get( lots of times with the front tire of the pavment by an inch or two, sometimes more) so the chain gets abused. And this is with the -1 front sprocket so there is a little extra hit on the chain.

Also the kit your looking at has added qualitys. litend sprockets and chain means less rotating mass. The engine will be able to spoolup quicker since there will be less flywheel effect. that means slightly quicker acceleration and quicker engine braking off throttle on the same stock gearing. Depending on how much and how hard you ride it should last a  long time also.

just wanted to update. got the chain and sprockets on. man what a difference. i didnt know how bad my old chain was. took it for a nice lil ride today but then got caught in the rain! haha go figure. but the bike feels great now. very smooth. i dont think all the rain would of taken off the original lube on the chain but ill make sure to put some on before i go out again

i dont think all the rain would of taken off the original lube on the chain but ill make sure to put some on before i go out again

actually, the rain will do a very good job of taking off any lube that is on there.  Though you do want to lube (or re-lube), you should clean your chain first.  Otherwise, you'll just be lubing the dirt that is on the chain and it will make the lube fling off more easily.

I use Motorex 411 chain cleaner.  I used to use a Grunge Brush but got too impatient for it.  Now I just use the cleaner and a rag.
