    Cant keep my f4 running!

I recently bought a 1999 f4. It does sit outside and the other day it was rainning. I waited until it stopped rainning and went to go ride. The bike started with no problems then i drove down my driveway and it died. I couldnt get it started without holding the throttle wide open. Its back firing and black smoke is coming out every time it fires. Ive been told the air filter could be saturated or something clogged in the carbs. Any suggestions before i take it up to get the carbs cleaned for $500? Please any input would help.

Sounds like you may have a hung needle valve.  Get a screw driver and tap the float bowls lightly with the base with the bike running.

did the bike fall over.  pull the fuel tank and check the airbox.  maybe full of water or oil.

I just checked the air filter and it seems fine. I tried starting it without the filter and still doing to same thing.

Re: Cant keep my f4 running!

So i replaced the plugs and it starts but its backfiring really bad still. I have to keep the throttle open in order to start it. I dont keep it running for very long because i dont want to burn up a piston if it is leaning out. whats next? Probably carbs clogged?
