Leaking a smalll amount of coolant

So I have noticed the past few rides(4 or 5) that upon the first 10 mins of starting and riding I get some coolant leak. I rode about 4 miles to the gas station and noticed the coolant leak. A few spots the size of a dime of so. I also noticed it dripped on the inner left fairing but the bike was on the kickstand. So I ride about 10 or 15 miles and the temp got up to about 6 to 7/8s of the guage. Stopped for some grub and checked for leaks and none. After I ate still none. It only does it on initial start. And on the ride back the bike temp never went above half. Also no leaks when I got home.

I did change the coolant and bleed as instructed a few weeks back. Have to check coolant when its cold and see where its at. I know I have lost some the past few rides.

Just weird that its only the first few mins. Thought the system might be purging itself but I filled everything

Re: Leaking a smalll amount of coolant

Do your checks , you should have a hot and cold level. water  and antifreeze will expand with heat so it could just be over flow from being  a little over full. If thats the case it will eventualy "fix" it's self. And i have a feeling that may be all it is.... since you did just change and bleed the system. and I assume there were no problems before and no over temp issues. It would likely just happen just after start up because the radatior builds preasure as the coolant heats and expands, once the engine reachs temp it stops expanding. Once it cools it shrinks again creating a vacum and drawing it back in from the over flow can. This could happen for a few days ( depending on how often you ride) after the change, until it gets far enough below the spill tube to not trickle in.

Re: Leaking a smalll amount of coolant

I have ridden about 10 times since I changed. I had an issue where it got real hot(not shut off hot) and puged itself of almost all the coolant and melted the res a while back. Just wondering how it got to the left side cause thats where it it dripping from. I thought the main hose to the block might be leaking.

Water level is between the 2 lines when warm. Im going to go check it now that its cold and see too.

Thanks for the input. To be honest I dont think it did it immediately after I changed it.

Funny thing is that I took it to the shop for a new back tire and thats when I first noticed it. I know they didnt even go near anything there so I cant even blame them.

wouldnt be a bad idea to pull the fairings when you check so you can see every thing a lil better. maybe even wash thing down with water and let it dry then start it and let it warm up.

did you figure out what caused it to over heat that one time?

Ha ha ha. Yeah. Left it running with the choke on too long on a warm day. My son needed something and about 15 mins later came out to a mess.

I did check the cold coolant level. Still right to the top line.

As long as your coolant level doesnt take a drastic drop I would just keep an eye on it and ride.I still tend to think you just got it a pinch over full and its pushing out the exess.

Re: Leaking a smalll amount of coolant

One more thing. I noticed today that Im getting almost to the H on my temp guage. ITs one thing after another. Now its was pretty nice out about 70 degrees.

I was burning up a 3 mile hill at about 90 to 100 in 3rd gear. Tach was about 6 to 7 I believe. Got almost to the H. My fan was actully on while I was moving that fast.

So I get where I am going and it cools to abour 6 to 7/8 on the guage and the fan kicks off.

I know there is a lot of factors here but it might be time for the dealer. And it is still pushing and pulling coolant as needed.

Very small drip today I noticed. Maybe just one. And of course it stopped almost immediately.

Re: Leaking a smalll amount of coolant

Something else is wrong here.......  Even if you did overfill the overflow resevoir, once the system purged itself it shouldn't keep leaking coolant.  You've already answered your own question.  The cold and hot lines are there on the overflow resevoir for a reason.  The cooland should be at the cold mark when the engine is cold, and only rise to the hot mark on the resevoir when the engine is hot........... not past the hot mark, and  out through the tube, and onto the ground. ........(which is directly beside the kickstand/bottom left fairing.)  Maybe the thermostat is NFG, or waterpump.............The temp should stay consistant when you're moving at 90 to 100....not climp to the H mark and beyond.      Maybe something happened when you left the choke on and the bike running for 15 Mins........I assume this is why you decided to change the cooland.....(since there was none left in the bike when you found it?)

Re: Leaking a smalll amount of coolant

I had exactly the same problem on the F4i.  The tiny puddles that I found were not leaks but actually collant boiling over, half condensing and dripping and half just gargling out of the vent hose.  You might have a blockage either from deposits or and air pocket.  I drainged my coolant then porbably spent about 3 gallons of vinegar filling it up, letting the bike run, boil it a bit, draining.  Then I refilled with new coolant making sure to do it right with no air pockets, letting it boil with the cap off and adding some more.  That fixed it.  Also make sure that your coolant pump is working, there's a tutorial here on that too.

Re: Leaking a smalll amount of coolant

You guys are all awesome for helping out. Thank you. I am taking it to the shop today. He ordered me a new clutch cable and thermostat for starters. Water pump was just done start of the season so that should be good but can never rule it out. thanks everyone
