This is kinda of related ( or maybe not)  . A few years ago I drove cross country from my home on the shore of MD to Colorado. It's basicly a strait shot for the most part on inerstate 70. Any way on that trip several if not most of the states require you to reduce speed and move to the left lane when over taking and passing POLICE, EMERGENCEY, AND HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE PERSONEL  when they are on the shoulder. So I guess in this case at least they want you to just stop.

commuting on a VLX600 shadow for now, 60MPG!!! I punched out the baffles, so it has that V-twin snap and crackle that made H/D so infamous. Except this little scute is rice powered!!lol

It really depends.  If you are *close* to an exit, then as long as you indicate that you see the officer and plan on stopping (tap brakes, reduce speed, signal), you are probably okay.  Now what constitutes "close" depends on the officer, but it doesn't mean a couple of miles.  There is a video shown on the wildest police shows all the time that is a lady driving for 8 miles before stopping for the trooper.  The trooper then rips her out of the car and ended up getting time off for using excessive force.  He probably should have been cooler about it, but come on, 8 miles???  It was in broad daylight with all kinds of cars going by and she didn't even drive to an exit, she just finally stopped at a random place along the highway.  Technically, at least in Florida, you have to immediately move as far right as practicable and slow to a stop upon the approach of an emergency vehicle with it's emergency equipment activated.  That means that if you kept going you could be cited for the failure to yield like you were.  You might be able to beat it, but you would have to have a good reason.  If you are a female and it's nighttime, you could be justified in driving a reasonable distance to a lighted area.  If not, pull as far right as possible and stop.  The officer will stop several feet from you and offset towards the roadway, providing an area of protection in the event someone rearends the patrol vehicle.  We are monitored constantly by video and audio recorders, so we are not going to do anything improper to you.  Good luck.
