    Speedo in Neutral

Just wondering how the bike knows how fast you are going when you are in neutral or with the clutch pulled in (since my understanding is that the speed is calculated by the gears, that is an undisputable truth right?).

    Thanks Stick out tongue

    Re: Speedo in Neutral

the speedo sensor picks up the output shaft rotation speed, which of course will rotate w/ the rear wheel as long as uve got a chain on there. it doesnt matter wat gear u r in or whether or not the clutch is engaged, speedo still works. a sensor on the other end of the transmission, ie near the clutch, would only really act as a tachometer. ud need to multiply that rotational speed by the ratio of each transmission gear to get the land speed, which is just a waste of time & money for a manufacturer.

So gearing (changing sprockets to sizes other than stock) does not affect the speedo or odometer, right?

    Re: Speedo in Neutral

incorrect. changes in sprocket size affect the ratio between the rear tire and the output shaft. therefore the output shaft will rotate at a different speed than previous... the reading shown by your speedo/odo will be altered.
