Choke does not work. Bike won't start in cold weather.

    Hello there,
I cant get my choke working properly. Its getting cold and I start having problems firing up the bike in the morning. When I engage the choke the RPMs go higher but immediately drop to almost zero. They dont stay at ~3k level.
I tried pretty much everything, cleaned the carbs checked the cables and other stuff - no luck. Everything seems to be intact. What else can I do to bring the choke back to normal?
    tnx

Like I said in another very similar post, old bikes get a bit finiky.  Try playing with the choke position.  On my older bike I would have to start it on full choke, then as soon as it starts I would decrease the choke a bit, and after about 30 seconds I would have to decrease it again, and that actually makes the RPMs shoot up.  In the cold my bike likes to warm up at about 70% choke.

I dont know if you ever owned an old carburated car but every driver would know exactly how far and at what moment to pull that choke plunger depending on the conditions. haha

Re: Choke does not work. Bike won't start in cold weather.

i can only recommend 2 things.

the first, is to do what i do when my bike doesnt wanna start and the chocke doesnt do the trick. I hold the starting button down and move the choke lever down until it hits the sweet pot and the bike starts and idles at 2k rpms. for some reason if its not in that sweet spot the choke doesnt work. and if i pull the choke all the way it will start
the rpms go up and then drop until the bike dies (usually a 2 secs process)

the second thing..is to take apart the section containing the choke lever, and just pull the choke cable with ur fingers....i did this once on an old ninja, and  it worked.

one thing that i've figured is that when ur r/r starts going bad ur choke doesnt function well. but it might just be my bike.

good luck, let us know if ur problem is fixed

    Thanks guys,
The problem is that choke seems to be working...but just a bit. I mean I can start the bike with full choke on. (so far its not that cold, about 45-50 F in the morning, it gets much worse when temperature drops below 40). If it starts I have to hold the throttle keeping RPMs higher. If I release the throttle RMPs drop immediately no matter what position the choke in and the bike just stalls. And even if I pull the choke on and off it does not increase RPMs. So, for me now to start the bike I have to pull the choke all the way; and if the bike starts I have to stay and hold the throttle freezing my butt off, untill the bike warms up.

The choke does 2 things. First it should bump up the idle speed for you. Its connected to a small cam on the end of the throttle shaft. With the tank off, if you move the choke, you should be able to see your throttle shaft move on the carbs. Second, it opens an extra circuit in the carbs, allowing more fuel into the engine. If those curcuits are plugged, your engine is going to be hard to start when it gets cold. Many times when carbs are cleaned, the choke curcuits are missed.

    Phil,
So that's why I am lost. Everything is connected and everything is moving. The choke bumps up the idle up to 3k rpms. But they immediately drop and bike stalls. And I have to keep the throttle on till the bike warms up. Playing with choke does not give a lot after I start the bike. It seems like choke works just for the first couple of seconds.

That is a classic sign of a plugged or partly plugged choke curcuit. Just enough fuel to get it started, but not enough to keep it running. You are get around this problem by opening the throttle yourself, which will keep the bike running, but it really isn't good because the mixture will still be too lean for a cold engine. Take the carbs off and make sure the choke curcuits are clean.

OK. I guess I ll do that. I cleaned them twice already in the past and it didnt help. May be I should completely dissable and clean every part of em.

    Tnx

How does one find chocke circuits?
Do the carbs have to be separated from one another for that?
    Thanks
